The Pattnaik laboratory conducts research on molecular biology of replication, immunopathogenesis, and host cell responses to infection by RNA viruses. We study vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), a model non-segmented negative-strand RNA virus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), an economically important swine pathogen, and Zika virus (ZIKV), a recently emerged virus causing congenital syndromes in the fetus of pregnant women and the newborns. Using infectious molecular clones developed in our laboratory for these viruses to manipulate the viral genomes, we investigate the role of viral genomic elements and protein factors that regulate replication as well as understand the role of specific viral proteins in virulence and immune response in animal models and how the knowledge can be exploited to generate attenuated viruses as vaccine candidates. In another area of investigation, we focus on generating protein nanoparticle-based subunit vaccines for some of these pathogens.
